Why Does Quantity Change the Price Per Shirt?
Larger custom shirt orders usually cost less per shirt because some of the work happens once whether you print 24 pieces or 240. When more shirts share that setup, each shirt carries a smaller part of the cost. Garment price breaks and production efficiency can lower the price further.
But that does not mean you should order shirts you do not need just to chase a lower price.
Some Work Happens Before Shirt Number One
Consider a screen-printed two-color shirt.
Before production begins, the artwork has to be prepared. Screens have to be created. The colors have to be registered so they line up correctly. Ink is prepared and the press is set up.
That happens before the first finished shirt.
Much of that setup is the same whether the order is small or large.
Think about preheating an oven. The oven still has to heat up whether you bake one tray or several.
Printing has the same kind of fixed preparation.
More Shirts Share the Same Setup
Suppose the setup for one design is spread across 24 shirts. Each of those 24 shirts is carrying part of that preparation.
Now imagine the same design and same setup spread across 72 shirts. There are three times as many shirts sharing the preparation.
At 150 shirts, the setup is spread even further. That is one major reason the price per piece falls as the quantity increases.
A Simple Way to Picture It

This does not mean setup is the only cost. The blank garment, ink, labor, decoration and other production costs still exist. The table simply shows why a fixed part of an order has a much larger effect on 24 shirts than it does on 150.
Blank Garments Can Have Quantity Price Breaks Too
The printing is only part of the cost. The blank garments themselves may also become less expensive per piece at certain quantity levels.
That means a larger order can benefit in two ways: the setup is spread across more shirts, and the starting garment may cost less per piece. Those savings can stack together.
The Biggest Savings Usually Happen Earlier
The price does not keep dropping at the same rate forever.
The difference between a very small order and a medium-size order can be meaningful because the setup is being spread much farther.
Once an order is already large, setup has become a relatively small portion of each shirt. Adding another 50 shirts may still reduce the price per piece, but not necessarily by the same amount as moving from 24 shirts to 75.
This is why there is eventually a point where ordering extra pieces just to lower the unit price stops making sense.
Do Not Buy Leftover Shirts Just to Reach a Price Break
This is especially important for booster clubs and school programs.
Suppose ordering additional shirts saves a little money per piece, but you finish the fundraiser with three boxes of sizes nobody bought. You did not save money. You converted fundraiser money into leftover inventory.
The better approach is to order around real demand and then look at whether a small increase makes sense if you are close to a useful quantity break.
A few extras for staff, new students or replacements can be reasonable. Guessing at dozens of extras usually is not.
Online Stores Change the Quantity Problem
A preorder store allows families to place their orders before the main production run.
Instead of guessing whether you need 12 mediums, 27 larges and 14 XLs, you already know what was purchased.
That lets the main run capture the advantages of a combined quantity without forcing the program to buy speculative inventory.
For fundraising programs, this is one of the biggest advantages of the online-store model.
Example: The Same Design at Three Quantities
Imagine the same two-color front design at 24, 72 and 150 shirts. This is an illustration, not a quote.
At 24 shirts, the setup is being carried by a relatively small number of pieces. At 72, that setup is spread over three times as many shirts, and the blanks may also reach a better purchasing tier. At 150, setup is spread even further.
The important lesson is not that 150 is always the magic quantity. It is that quantity affects the economics of the same exact design.
How Many Should You Actually Order?
Start with real demand. Then ask whether you are near a meaningful quantity break and whether the extra pieces would actually have a purpose.
If the answer is yes, rounding up may make sense. If the answer is, “Maybe somebody will eventually buy them,” that is inventory speculation.
For school programs, we usually prefer systems that keep the shirts moving onto people instead of into storage boxes. Quantity is only one of the things that determine a shirt’s price.
